April 30, 1912Dear dear Osborns,It was ineffably fine to see yon all united in your blessed home, hale and happy, hearts aglow with thanks to God ere I bade goodby.I'm in my old library den, house and home desolate, nobody living in it save a hungry mouse or two, contrast abysmal against yours and Mrs. Harrimans. The garden grounds fortunately are beautiful, fresh and flowery rejoicing in brightest springtime luxuriance. The roses especially are overpassing all bounds, while the Lebanon and Himalaya Cedars, the Australian shrubs and trees, and the oaks on the Valley hills seem more exuberant and happier than ever. Strange to say both Helen and Wanda who owned the blessed old place were trying to sell it to an Oakland somebody or nobody stranger. So I've bought it myself for the sake of the lang syne memories about it, though the wanderer may never be able to make it his home.Anyhow, dear friends, here or there or fateful anywhere I shall always be faithfully gratefully affectionately yours.John MuirThe photograph you wished I sent from Los Angeles a few days ago.Forward letters to MartinezApril 30, 191205180
