[J. E.] Calkins
Martinez, Jan. 7, 1909.Dear Mr Calkins:Many thanks for your long kind plans for getting the books, so often talked about, off my hands. It looks well, & is perfectly delightful & if tried I doubtless would be the only one in the company found wanting. You say "suppose you pack up those notes, books, specimens & what not". You have no idea how many they are. Your 5 rooms would be filled to the ceiling & poor Mrs Calkins would groan aghast at such housekeeping. I'm trying now to condense & arrange the stuff so as to make it portable & available, Keeping the best of it in the bank safe until wanted. Even this seemingly easy work will take lots of time- especially when so seriously interrupted by business, Yosemite park etc therefore as far as I can now see I must peg away here a while longer. Ever yoursfaithfully John Muir09208
