Decemher 14th,___190 8.Professor John Muir,Martinez, California. My dear Professor Muir:The presence of Professor Penck of Berlin and many mountaineers and scholars who will be attending the meeting of this A.A.A.S. in Baltimore, bids fair to make the coming meeting of the American Alpine Club a notable one in the quality and number of participants. In letters received from the members of the Council of the Club, there is voiced a universal desire to have you attend and preside at the meeting and I have been asked to communicate to you their views on the subject. I know it is a long journey to make to attend one meeting and dinner, but we have been hoping that this call and other interests in the East might be strong enough to induce you to undertake the journey. Realizing the considerable outlay involved, the Board has authorized the payment of the sum of Fifty Dollars towards paying your traveling expenses in case you come East.In case you decide to attend the meeting, will you be kind enough to telegraph me to that effect in order that I may include the information in the final notices which go to the printer on Dec. 21st?
