Martinez, Dec. 24, 1908
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Bailey:
Your good New Year wishes make me glad, and I wish you the same with all my heart.
Have you collected any telling specimens from the New Mexican fossil forests you mention, or have you written anything about them? I wish I could have been with you to compare these old trees with those of Arizona.
I felt lonesome not seeing Dr. Merriam this year, and Helen and I mourned our grand old Uncle James. Helen is getting well, but she will remain with Van Dykes on the desert another year at least.
Several weeks ago I sent some nuts, etc., hoping they might reach you by New Year.
Faithfully yours,
(Signed) JOHN MUIR
