[illegible][letterhead]Oct. 31,1907Dear Muir:Yesterday I saw Mr. W. B. Bourne of the Spring Valley — a friend of highly respected friends of mine — James D. Hague (brother of Arnold) & Arthur D. Foote — and he told me many things about the Hetch - Hetchy scheme, which I am passing on the 'Sec'y Garfield. Bourne says it is impracticable & is merely another attack of Phelan on the Spring Valley. Garfield is taking the matter up very soon. There has been no chance to get an effective backfire here in the newspapers and any way I think03961it would have been impolite as it would have seemed like forcing Garfield's hand.I'll keep you posted. Let me know anything you hear and tell me what you know of Mr Bourne. Faithfully yours,R. U. Johnson.
