CanJan 23-06John Muir EsqDear FriendI am back in old Canada again (My bro James is very sick and I have come to see him He is in a bad way it is no doubt his last sickness Kidney disorder bringing on dropsical conditions and all the accompany troubles He is thin and his big head big bones large ears and large nose show strongly against his emaciated body but his mind is clear and can converse without much effort His feet 5 times the proper size and have been tapped to let the water out yet he can stand on them and get from bed to chair He has got around after similar sicknesses before, but there is no hope this time. Meaford is a pretty town, Has a fine artificial harbor, and a good lake and036852Railroad trade Big Elevators for receiving and shipping grainBut this to you at least can be only a matter of passing interest I want to tell you that I have at length [succeeded?] in securing that long looked for agreement that must be made before I could make my Cal journey I pressed the matter to a [focus?] because I was coming here. I affixed my signature and drew a small instalment two hours before taking the train for this place. I need not give particulars, if is sufficient to say the imediate effect will practically treble my present income and may go very much beyond that; insuring for me a respectable [competence?] and something for good and needy causes, and still have a remnant to pas on to my children.
