ARNOLD ARBORETUM. HARVARD UNIVERSITY.Jamaica Plain, Mass. December 1, 1896.My dear Mail":I have been re-reading Douglas's Journal as we agreed I should do. It does not seem to me, on the whole, to be interesting enough to wairant [ellegible] publication. If you find that there is no copy in the library of the Academy, I can send out to you for perusal the volume containing it if you would like to have me do so. He certainly claims that he measured Pinus Lambertiana 57 feel in circumference. He also claims, however, that he found Pinus poderosa 55 feet in circumference and Larix occidentalis 30 feet in circumference. The size of these measurements would seem to throw some doubt on his accuracy in such matters. Certainly Pinus ponuerosa 55 feet in circumference is as remarkable as Pinus Lambertiana 57 feet in circumference. I do not like to believe that the old fellow was drawing a long bow, especially as he was one of your favorite Scotchmen, out I cannot help thinking that there is some exaggeration somewhere.I have a long letter from lemmon in answer to one I wrote him telling me that I could perhaps give him some information that I have gathered this summer. He plies me with questions and says he aid not call on me when I was in San Francisco because he was afraid if he left his house he might miss a visit from me; certainly ingenious.I am just as lame as when I wrote you a few days ago and a great deal crosser than I was then. Faithfully yours,[illegible]02181
