Martinez, Nov. 4, 1907.Mr. O. C. Haslett,San Francisco.Dear Sir:-You are undoubtedly right in your contention as to the Red Fir & Douglas Spruce, These trees are not in the least alike. The cones of the Red Fir-Abies magnifica grow straight upright on the upper branches. Those of the Douglas Spruce- Pseudo tsuga Douglasii hang down from the ends of the branchlets. The leaves also are very different as doubtless you well know.I have not yet published anything on the Caucasus, or indeed on any part of my long Journey abroad. You should, as a lover of forests, join the Sierra Club and study with others on the summer outings.Faithfully yours,John Muir.
