[letterhead]Chicago, Oct 1, 1907Dear Mr Muir-Your letter of Aug 21 reached me at Mr Logans house, on Long Island Sound near D[illegible] [illegible] We returned from there about 10 days ago, where I spent about 5 weeks sitting on their wide porch surrounded by rocks & trees. looking out on the Sound and breathing the salt air- It did me a world of good, but poor Fay (Mrs [illegible]) had a hard time of it. Soon after our arrival there an abscess made its appearance and after weeks of pain & suffering it has now developed into a f[illegible]. It was the care of her that prevented me from answering your letter sooner, and is preventing us from starting to California. It has been decided that she will have to go to the hospital & have it cut out. She dreads it very much & I am anxious over the operation, as there is danger in giving her an anesthesia - she will probably go to the03947
