Berkeley, March 18, '95.Prof. John Muir, Dear Sir:My silence is due to the sudden death of a relative by marriage. Mr. Olin Johnson of the "Union Lumber Co." -- his son was to furnish much for the entertainment. He was hurriedly called away east to attend his father's funeral, so the redwood day is set for April 1st, You cannot know how we all regret that you cannot favor us. Thank you much for the address sent. I will get Prof. Joseph LeConte to help me with it, and it must do vicarious duty. And now I wish to ask another favor. My husband's father, the Hon. John Conness, the man for whom Mount Conness was named and who has done much for California in the Geological Surveys, etc. will be here from Boston next week. He wishes to spend his last days in this lovely state, and will look for a favorable location. Can I take him to Martinez to see your place, and can I also fetch Mrs. Chas. Webb Howard? She is the daughter of the late Judge Oscar Shafter. You can tell us so much about everything we wish to know -- soil, fruits, etc.I also am very desirous of adding your wife's name on the roll of membership of " Sorosis." We wish a representation from the members of the old pioneer families. It is a delightful and progressive Club, and I am sure she will enjoy it.Yours sincerely,Harriet N. ConnessDear old Keith is quite innocent of any sin against you. I am alone the guilty one.H.N.C.
