Milwaukee, Wis., [illegible] 1907My Dear Sir,Pardon my intrusion upon your valuable time, but may I venture to ask for a statement of your experience as to the effects of alcohol and tobacco upon the mind and health?Do stimulants and narcotics give increased strength, greater lucidity of mind, and more continuous power, or do they weaken and cloud the intellect, and lessen that capacity for enduring a prolonged strain of mental exertion which is one of the first requisites of the intellectual life?With the hope of arriving at data which would be trustworthy and decisive, I have entered upon an independent inquiry among the representatives of literature, science and art, as to Whether they have found advantage, or the reverse, in the use of alcohol and tobacco.Assuring you that what information you may condescend to contribute shall be highly appreciated, and thanking you in advance, I have the honor to be, sir,Very respectfully yours,[illegible]03986
