Sept. 18, 1907. Sr. John Muir, Martinez, California. Dear Mr. Muir:- I have just arrived in Boston, after a three weeks' strenuous business trip to close my Western trip. I am advised by the Bausch & Lomb Optical Company that a l/2" eye-piece could be used to advantage with your 2/3" objective for work on opaque objects. So I have ordered one sent to you and also a l/2" hand magnifier, as I agreed when I was in Marteniz. Together with the outfit you already have, including the 1" hand lens I left with you, these will give you the following powers:- With the 1" hand lens .................. 10. diameters" " l/2" " " ...............20 " " microscope, using 2/3" objective and 2" eye-piece, ............................................. 41. diametersWith the microscope, using 2/3" objective and l" eye-piece, ............................................................... 87 diametersWith the microscope, using 2/3" objective and 1/2" eye-piece, ............................................................... 146 diameters With the microscope, using l/6" objective and 2" eye-piece, .................................................................. 205 diameters With the microscope, using l/6" objective and 1" eye-piece, .................................................................. 385 diameters With the microscope, using l/6" objective and 1/2" eye-piece, ........................................................................ 720 diameters. It is doubtful, however, if you would get very satisfactory results using the l/6" objective, as the focus is so short it cuts off most of the light. However, this will be improved when you get your vertical illuminator. I understand that they hope to be able to mail you this within 10 days. I will follow up the matter and see that you get it as soon as they can possibly send it from the factory. (continued)03944
