WASHINGTON ACADEMY OF SCIENCESWashington, D. C.Dec. 31, 1904.PRESIDENT:CHAS.D.WALCOTT,GEOLOGICAL SURVEY.SECRETARY:FRANK BAKERZOOLOGICAL PARK.TREASURER:BERNARD R.GREEN,CONGRESSIONAL LIBRARY BUILDING.Mr.John Muir,Martinez, California.Dear Sir:-The Washington Academy of Sciences contains one hundred and sixty non-resident members, representing many lines of scientific study and thought. Its resident membership contains about an equal number of the leading scientific investigators of Washington. The Academy as represented by its Board of Managers desires to develop a more intimate connection between these two groups of scientific men than now exists. To bring them into contact for their mutual benefit is clearly one of the fields of usefulness the Academy may well cultivate. While it does not desire to encroach upon the special fields already well occupied by the local societies, it recognizes that there are numerous topics and problems in which specialists in many lines have a common interest. It is the intention of the Academy to hold meetings at which subjects of this broader scope may be presented and discussed. It is hoped that the non-resident members especially will find it both agreeable and profitable to come before the Academy with important developments in their several lines of work, particularly such as are of interest to scientific men generally. In pursuance of this plan the Board of Managers cordially invites you to present before the Academy any results of your own[03495]
