[First draft of letter, in note-book]Martinez, NOV. 18, '04.Dear Mr. Colby:As yon suggest, Mr. Force Parker, Mr. Clair S. Tappan, and yourself are added to the Committee on Yo[semite] recession. The statement you have drawn up on Yo[semite] recession seems to me just what it should be, excepting a few lines which I have marked on pages 1, 2, 4 & 5, and which would, 1 think, be likely to do more harm than good and had better be omitted. with those excepted, the statement is first-rate, and just what is wanted.Several hundred copies should be printed and distributed to members, of course, and the Legislature. Nothing can be gained by stirring up bad feeling. And our efforts at present should be directed simply to recession to the federal Govt., without mention of departments or persons, as the Bureau of Forestry or Mr. Pinohot.[John Muir]03098
