ARNOLD ARBORETUM,HARVARD UNIVERSITY.Jamaica Plain, Mass., October 22, [illegible].My dear Muir:I thank you for your note of the 16th. You will, I am sure, be glad to know that my daughter is doing as well as possible and that in a few days now she will be sitting up again, and at the end of another month, if all goes well, as good or better than new. It has been, however, a terrible strain on us all.And now Dana is dead and buried and another of my old friends gone. The loss of him and Stiles is serious for the preservation of the forests. Both of these men were deeply interested in the subject and able to help along the cause in many directions. I feel pretty badly crippled and not very cheerful. Fortunately, however, there are still trees in the world to look at and to study. Just now I have to devote so much time to Garden and Forest that I have not been able to settle down to the last volume of The Silva, but I shall get around to it in time.I am glad to hear that page continues to stir you up. It would seem that you require a good deal of it.Faithfully yours,[illegible]John Muir, Esq.Martinez, Cal.02352
