71[First draft of letter,in note-book][William Franklin Herrin]Feb. 26. '05.(fo Mr. Herrin):Now, thank Heaven, under your able guidance, 1 em victoriously out of it. I am an accomplished lobbyist, and my politioal education is finished triumphantly, firmly rounded out and manifested to the world like the Capitol dome, leaving me glad and free to return to my mountains and glaciers. But never, I fear, shall 1 be able to forget the phenomenal oratory of the opposition. Desert sand-storms and dust whirlwinds must surely bring it to mind. Now for your dinner! The top of the S[outh] Dome would be an appropriate place, or Mt. Whitney or Shasta. A fine white cloth is already spread there. But I am afraid Willie [Keith] will not be able to climb to any such tables. fate your pick. Let it be when and where you will.Faithfully yours,[John Muir][See other draft of letter, evidently of same date]03098
