ARNOLD ARBORETUM, HARVARD UNIVERSITY.Jamaica Plain, Mass., July 11, 1904.My dear Muir:I am much obliged for your letter of July 6th and the information about our St. Petersburg friend who, on the whole, was about as satisfactory a Russian as we encountered.You can very well talk about making descriptions short and sharp and crystal clear. If any one can understand what I have written they will do better than I can. Color touches all left out as we are very short of space. The illustrations are really good and instructive, and I hope the keys will prove useful. I have in type all the Conifers, the Oaks, Willows, Birches, Poplars. Hickories, and several of the other troublesome groups. I have just now reached your old friend Crataegus, which is worse than the hot wave which is now upon us.I should have written you before that every member of the family is in excellent condition, including Alice who apparently has been greatly benefitted by her escapade of last summer.
