GIFFARDRALPH S. HOSMER,SUPERINTENDENTOF FORESTRYDAVID HAUGHS,FIELD FOREMANHONOLULU, T. H., May 19, 1904.Mr. John Muir,Honolulu, T. H.My dear Mr. Muir-Through our common friend, Mr. T. P. Lukens of Pasadena, California, I am informed that you are to stop over for a time in Hawaii. It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this Territory and to our forests. I regret that I cannot greet you in person on the arrival of the Siberia, but I wish to assure you that I shall be delighted to do anything in my power to assist you in seeing the islands.I have already made tentative plans in regard to one or two trips, which I think you might like to take. I shall return to Honolulu on either Saturday night or Sunday, and will then call upon you to discuss them in detail. I have taken the liberty of making these arrangements at the suggestion of Mr. Lukens. If you care to accompany the Filipino Delegation, the Committee would be gald to have you do so.If you have any correspondence to get off, I wish you would make yourself at home in my office, on the grounds of the Government Nursery, on King Street. My stenographer, Miss Peterson, will be very glad to take any letters or other dictation which you may have to give her.03358
