[First draft of letter, in note-book][Edward Henry Harriman] Martinez, January 5th, 1905.Dear Mr. Harriman:A bill for the recession of Yosemite Valley to the Federal Government will be introduced in our present State Legislature. I think it ought to pass. If you are like-minded, and can help us to secure its passage, I wish you would. The President is in favor of it, so also is our Governor and perhaps more than nine-tenths of the people of California. And as far as I know all the newspapers of the State favor the change except the Examiner, which with damnable perverted industry is trying to bury the truth beneath a sham storm of fables.The Yosemite is a natural part of the surrounding Nat[ional] Park, and evidently ought to be under one management.The Valley has been grossly mismanaged. Under Federal control we may expect that it would be as well managed as the Yellowstone Park, and be made as accessible and attractive to as great a number of travelers.[John Muir]03098
