[letterhead]April 1, 1899Prof. John MuirMartinez, Calif. My dear Sir:A wealthy New Yorker is going to Cook's Inlet and Kodiak, ID., starting from Puget Sound the last weeks of May and returning in 60 days. We will have one of the best steamers on the Pacific coast, and his purpose is to take his family and a party of scientific men and see the country to best advantages. We will take the inside passage up & probably return direct from Kodiak or the Peninsula. Among those going are Dr. Wm H. Dall, G.K. Gilbert (geologist), L.C. Caville (botanist) & probably Mr. [illegible]. The projector of the enterprise, who pays all expenses, has asked me to invite you to be one of the party, and I earnestly trust you will accept. He wished to keep the matter quite & confidential for the present.I tried to call you on at Martinez last October but found you were then in the East. Hoping to be with you on this trip,I remain very truly yoursC. Hart Merriam
