Pasadena Aug 4. 1898Mr John MuirDear SirI send you by even date copy of L.A. Evening Express. with article marked on Editoral page - I had written two before on the same general subject which were printed on the same page. and this one is the result of a letter I wrote to Mr. J.P. Lukens (who is in Big Bear this summer), for for facts regarding the devastation of our mountain reservations by sheep. I am, two or three times a year, an eye witness of the rascality in question.I have read with great satisfaction that the sheep have been driven out of the Sierra reservations & we wish, perhaps against hope, that the same thing could be done here. I wish the "Express" (Mr c.D. Willard) might be commended for using his paper in this good cause, and (I mark the suggestion with deference) if he could receive a card of approval for his Editorial from so distinguished an authority as yourself, it would doubtless be very gratifying & stimulating. I have never personally met the gentleman, but I believe he is a man of parts & has the welfare of So. California at heart - (He has a circulation of 12 to 14000). My son, who is in his office for the College vacations tells me that he has a copy of your book "Mountains of California" on his desk With great esteemBenj N. Payo
