Fir FlowersMartinez Sep. 18. 1899.My dear Mr Lukens.The growth of you refer to on the under side of the fir branches are the male flowers. In the spring they are purple & make a fine show. The two firs are easily distinguished by their bark that of the con color is gray. of the magnifica purplish red. The crimson rosettes on the ends of the pine branchlets among the needles are the female flowers. The male are an inch or more long, in conspicuous clusters.I am very glad to hear that your family are all well. Mrs Muir's health has been poor all summer but she is getting better The girls are quite well. It will be some time before the Alaska material is worked up & published.Love to LottieEver YoursJohn Muir
