Martinez, Feb 5, 1897.My dear Johnson-I see that another attempt is being made at Washington to cut off the townships along the north boundary of the Yosemite National park-the Old Caminetti job. This portion of the park is nobly forested, abounds in fine trout streams & lakes tributary to the Tuolumne & is easily accessible from the rest of the park & must of course be defended. Instead of throwing this region open to destruction the whole mountain region northward to the American River should be reserved at once.I received your last letter yesterday I 11 try to see McKenna. It is thought here by the politicians that he will get Judge Fields place on the Supreme bench though in the meantime he will be made Sec of Interior.The chances for the resolution for recession are becoming more favorable Even McAllister after visiting the legislature announces a change of heart-political heart-If you find Sen.
