[letterhead]Aug 21, 1899My dear friend Muir - We see by the papers that the Harriman Expedition has returned. As your name is not mentioned it is possible that you have stayed in Alaska for a little uninterrupted work. We hope however that you have gotten home safely and well. Our friend Keith passed through here Friday on his way home from Europe and spent several hours with us to out great enjoyment. We begged him to stay longer but he said he was "nothing but a California gopher" and was in a hurry to get back to his hole which he proposes to pull in after him. He looks well and I think the trip has done him lots of good.I have kept my nose over this desk every day since January, so am going next week up to my club hosue at [Puckana?] Lake for a straight months vacation - Fay will go02607
