Feb. 17, 1889 Dear Mrs. Carr, I will do the best I can about the return of the photographs but fear some of them may be lost. I have been trying to get back many of my pencil sketches without success so far. That was a grand booming train of cars you had lately. I didn’t know there were so many brothers. The doctor must have enjoyed their visit very much and lived the early morning days over again. Wanda has just recovered from scarlet fever and I have had anxious weeks of nursing. Little Helen was taken to Grandpa’s by her mother and has escaped the contagion so far. I am now in the old house alone waiting for weather and sulphur to sweeten things when the family may venture back. Had a good time on Rainier. Cordially yrs John Muir
