[letterhead]Berkeley, April 29, 1913.ConfidentialMy dear Mr. Muir,The University desires on May the 11th its Commencement Day to confer upon you the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws,--for reasons which require no statement. I trust this will be acceptable to you and that you can be present to receive the degree. It will give me great personal pleasure, --and it will give everybody pleasure, to have the university do this.It is our custom to make no announcement regarding the honorary degrees until they are conferred. We assemble before the Library at 9:45 am & the exercises begin about 10 a.m. At noon we shall hope to have you as our guest at the "Alumni Luncheon" under05433
