POSTMASTER,From 3806 Per--------- Martinez, [California] March 4, 1913.Dear Mr. Whitehead:About two or three weeks ago I wrote you that I had directed my publishers to strike out of the sketch of your uncle Charles that part which gave you pain in "The Story of my Boyhood." As I feared, the corrections arrived too late for the first edition, but they will be made in the plates for the second and all after editions, as you will see by enclosed page of letter. My first letter to you was addressed "Mountain Valley Springs Co,, Southern Club Building, 126 Central Ave." Kindly let me know whether it was received or not.I should be glad to get news of your younger brother Benjamin.Faithfully yours, John Muir.[Enclosure]Editorial Rooms Houghton Mifflin Company, 4 Park Street, Boston, February 25, 1913.Dear Mr. Muir:We have your letter of the 15th with the corrections for the story of "Poor Charlie" in "The Story of My Boyhood and Youth." We are sorry to say that these corrections come too late for the first edition of the book, which is already printed, but we are ordering them made for the second edition. We expect to publish the book on March 15th. We are using a portrait of you at a later period for the photogravure frontispiece, since you were unable to find a contemporary photograph.
