[1913?]MartinezDear friend: with all my heart I thank you for your kind call to your home, and you surely know how gladly I shall run to it as soon as I can escape from this jungle tangle of wordwork. When that will be only Heaven knows. How strange it seems that work should be able to shove us from continent to continent yet prevent us from going from friend to friend let hearts push and pull as they may. It sometimes looks as if I was still held fast bound by the contrary extravagantly self denying doctrine taught in old Scotland that we should never do what we most like to do but only what we like least.I got my S. American & African notes copied and locked up for safe keeping before I left Los Angeles. Here in my lonely den I have all my old Alaska notes about me and am hard at work on them, never going out except now and then to the adobe for a meal, eating little, taking
