Martinez, California.March 11, 1903.Dr. C. Rowell,Sacramento, Gal.My dear Sir:-The High Sierra is always open and hospitable to Mountaineers afoot, but with pack animals nearly all the region above an elevation of 7000 or 8000 feet is inaccessible until about the end of June. If the Presidents trip must be short, and be made in April or May I agree with you that he had better go to Yosemite by public conveyance. And from the Valley as a central camp, excursions could be made afoot to high points around the rim commanding general views of the Range.I have agreed to go with a party on a trip through the forests of Russia, Manchuria and Japan. This party is to sail from New York about the last of May or early in June. Until that time I shall be glad to devote myself to the President and go the President and go with him wherever he likes. [illegible]Faithfully yours[illegible][03180]
