[1][letterhead]Mch 25. 1903My dear friend Muir-Wife & I were preparing to start on our journey up the coast, when word came the other day that I must come home at once. A land suit involving title to property of great value in which I am a very important witness is set for hearing Arl 3. The rightful owner is a personal friend of mine and my testimony will save him the property, so I must go home at once.We leave day after tomorrow, and we both regret exceedingly that we cannot see our dear friends at Martinez & Berkeley before going home, but it cant be helped this time.03194[2][letterhead]We cecd your letter of the 25th [illegible] in which you said "If you can't come here, I'll be down there as soon as I can get a confounded article off my hands".I did not write you to come because I thought it would be hard for you to get away and we had our tickets home by way of San Francisco. I exchanged these tickets for tickets via the Santa Fe as I fortunately could get a drawing room on that road on the 27th & it would be hard to get like accomidations up the coast as so many have gone & are daily going that way home. It was our intention to spend a week or ten days at Santa Barbara, a few days at the Del Monte in Monteray & about 2 weeks in San Francisco, but you know what "Bobby" Burns said about the plans of mice & men- wife joins me in sincere regards to you all [yours t[illegible]] A.
