Visalia, Cal. Sep. 26th, 1902.Mr. John Muir,Martinez, Cal.My dear Mr.Muir,---The mornings mail has brought me a very welcome visitor "The Mountains of California". My wife and I will certainly enjoy its perusal, as it will be next to a personal visit from its author, and bring to mind many pleasant scenes and thoughts. After the club left the canyon my wife and 1 made a trip over to the Middle Fork, going up to Triple Falls, and after coming back through Granite Basin we diverged and went over to Paradise Valley. After spending several days there we returned to the canyon, thence to the Giant Forest, where we took the high trail to Mineral King. The trail from Giant Forest to Mineral King was the roughest we found on our entire outing. The trail on either side of the upper crossing on Marble Fork between the canyon and Giant Forest has been very greatly improved since you came out. The trail is now completed on a grade for a wagon road from the General Sherman tree in Giant Forest over the rocky ridge on North side of river towards the willow Meadows. It is fine.with very many thanks for your interesting book, I remainSincerely yours[illegible][03063] 0SOHS
