[First draft of letter, in note-book #59] (28)Martinez, Cal.,Jan. 2 '02.My dear Gannett:I've regretted over and over again that I was not with you on that Arizona trip, and now that I have to write an article on the Grand Canyon and feel that my ignorance about it is as grand as the Canyon itself, I regret it more keenly than ever. But the proofs of that Park book came swarming on, and one or the other had to be neglected. How I envy you and Merriam your ableness in getting your work done in writing on and on steadily, unhaltingly, in season and out of season, like big rivers in flood, while my literary jobs require boundless time and crawl slow as glaciers.I hate to write on anything I know so little about as I do the Canyon. Have visited it only once. I have Powell's admirable report of his drift through it. If you can send me any other official report to help out I'll be much obliged.We all remember your visit with the greatest pleasure, and heartily wish you many happy new years.Faithfully yours,J.
