NEW YORK.August 21, 1901.Mr, John Muir,Martinez, California.My dear Mr. Muir;I have been wondering if you have returned yet from the Yosemite trip with the Sierra Club. It was a great disappointment to me that I could not go along and enjoy with you a season of "wilderness," but my work would not permit.Since my visit with you I have been working as I could on an article which I hope may give the readers of Mc Clure's Magazine a better acquaintance with you. I shall venture presently to send you a copy of the manuscript. I have endeavored to make the article thoroughly accurate, but having to depend somewhat upon my memory of the things we talked about, I may have slipped into error.I recall your having expressed admiration for Walter Bagehot's Essays. Our firm has recently issued a rather nice special edition of his "Shakespeare The Man" which I thought you might like to have, and I am therefore sending it to you.I saw Mr. Johnson the other day, and told him of my visit with you.Very sincerely yours,Ray S.
