[First draft of letter, in note-book #59] (79)Martinez, Jan. 31 [1901].Captain Frank Weir,Dear Sir:Many thanks for permission to use the admirable illustrations of your report on the Sequoia parks. Grand telling tree pictures are very hard to get even from the most accessible forests (much more from those of the Kaweah). Your report recalls a long, rough, lonely three mos. trip I made 25 years [ago] from Yo[semite] along the Sequoia belt to its southern extremity in the head of Deer Creek, tracing the boundaries of all the groves and forests and the gaps between them. It was then that I first described and named the Giant Forest of the Kaweah and made pencil sketches of those beautiful Sequoia bogs and meadows. Some four years ago I took Prof. Sargent and General Abbot up to the Middle Kern, but they were [in] too great a hurry to visit the Giant Forest. All my friend. G. Pinohot's forest works I have, also the Hon. Sec.'s report to which you refer, and indeed nearly all of the Government reports on forest matters. And I have innumerable photographs of forest views, but really good telling tree pictures are rare. Will it be possible for me to obtain copies of the photos from which your illustrations were made?[John Muir]02890
