ARNOLD ARBORETUM,HARVARD UNIVERSITY.Jamaica Plain Mass,..........September..13,...1901.My dear Muir:What in the world has become of you? Have you disappeared in the ruins of the Muir glacier or dried up and blown away like one of your beloved alpine Junipers? The last time I heard from you was in the early spring when you said you were going to join Canby and me before we got home from the south. The habit of quitting seems to be growing on you badly.I have been hard at work all summer and have not been away but for one day since May.Now I am starting off for a three or four weeks' trip about the Great Lakes, etc., hunting for Crataegus.Canby,unfortunately, won't be with me for he went to Europe six weeks ago with his son who is out of health and won't be back until about the first of October.Our old friend Dr. Mohr has died, as you have perhaps seen. You have also perhaps seen in the September number of The World's Work how I look when I have just escaped from an inebriate asylum.This is not intended for a friendly letter, however, for such a quitter really deserves nothing at my hands, but to tell you that my youngest daughter with her aunt Mrs. Thayer is going to California to attend the Episcopal Convention in San Francisco.She will be at the Palace Hotel about the first of October I suppose.If you happen to[02893]
