[First draft of letter, in note- book #59] (66)

Martinez, Oct. 21, 1900.

My dear Dr. Mellichamp:

I had some hopes of seeing you this fall, but they are gone, and I must just work on at my notes. All the summer has gone by like a dream while I sat at my desk, except a month in the Sierra with Dr. Merriam and Mr. and Mrs. Bayley, all naturalists and good fellows. Sargent and Can by are out Crataegus hunting again, and I hope you have seen them. I long to hear from you once more.
I send a magazine containing some of my flower notes which may interest you, - if not, you, then Mrs. M. or the children. With best wishes, hoping the winter will be good to you, [and] with kindest regards to Mrs. M. and the children, I am,

Faithfully yours,

J. M.
