ARNOLD ARBORETUM HARVARD.Jamaica Plain, Mass, February 9, 1900My dear Muir;A line to tell you that we are safely back from the other side of the Atlantic where I had a most interesting visit and did what I had to do in the Crataegus matter. I did not see our friend Sir Joseph Hooker who was very dangerously ill with the prevailing influenza and when I left England there were grave doubts whether he would recover [illegible]. There seemed to be complications of heart trouble Which is only too apt to follow this disease, especially in the case of old persons. In any case I fear his days of usefulness are over.I am now beginning to get ready for our southern trip and shall soon want to hear when and where to meet, for I take it for granted that you have at last got over your bad habit of and now look at things in a reasonable way.Guilder, I am sorry to say, is pretty well broken down in health and he and his wife are leaving for Europe this week. Overwork and anxiety about the magazine appear to have about finished him.Wtrite as soon as you get this if you have not done so alreadyFaithfully yours,[illegible]John Muir, Esq.Martinez, Cal.[02663]
