January 21, 1901.Dear Mr. Muir,The time is now at hand for making up our final list of books for spring publication.Among them we should be very glad if we could include your book on The National Parks.Toward such a book we have now in hand material that we have already published in the Atlantic as follows:American Forests, August, 1897. Wild Parks and Forest Reservations of the West, January, 1898.Yellowstone National Park, April, 1898. Animals of the Yosemite,November, 1898. Birds of the Yosemite,December, 1898.Yosemite National Park,August, 1899. Forests of the Yosemite,April, 1900. Wild Garden of Yosemite Park, August, 1900. Fountains and Streams of the Yosemite (not yet published.)This makes a total of about 75,000 words—rather a small book.But you will member you wrote us in August saying that you purposed writing also for such a book a general forest and irrigation article.You also mentioned at that time one or more articles which the Century Company had published, and which you said they would allow you to use in book.If you could let us have the final chapter on forests and irrigation—let us say within three weeks— we should be able to bring the book out in the middle of the spring season and give it an excellent chance of success.I should be sorry, however, to make a belated book.It may be that you have the concluding paper for such a book well in hand.If so, and if you would send us the titles of the Century articles, we could go on at once and put the book in type.We should be very glad to do this so as to get the first book well forward and be ready for the book on Alaska which is to follow it.I should be much obliged if you would give us your[02834]
