2also an address to Hoke Smith hoping he will walk in the same blessed forest ways as his predecessor etc, & perhaps remonstrating against the possible appointment of Irish to the land commission – etc – But you can do infinitely more in this line than we can as you understand all the machinery & are standing close by with your hand on it. I think Mr Irish is now in Washington urging his big democratic claims, & though wicked, like the devil he is smart & has great power in dark places. Do what you can to make light shine on him. The Yosemite report is capital. Go ahead at Washington – California I am convinced will do nothing about recession for a long time though not opposed generally to it.Ever CordiallyJohn Muir
