and that I am not only charmed by your friendly address, but also feel in some way proud of it, I must confess, carrying in itself, as it does, the flattering and perhaps a little conceited evidence that the old saying, "out of sight, out of mind," is altogether erroneous, so far as I am peronaly concerned. That is not a light satisfaction, I must say, for a man of my age (79.), after an absence of seventeen years and more from California and my friends of younger days.
