[2]intended to dispose of his property but he neglected to make a will so Mother, myself and my sister & brother, met and agreed to settle it as he intended to, so my brother & sister gets a thousand dollars apiece and the farm and the rest to me and he wished me to care for Mother while she lives, now we had our heads set on coming to you and I hate worse than ever to give it up now for Father is gone now and you knew him well enough to know he was all the world to us, so now Mr Muir next to Father, we write to you and ask you to be our advisor so now what shall we do. Mother will not consent to [3]live with any of the rest neither does she want to leave the old home, so Willie & I does not know what to do. The night before Father died he was talking to us about you all the evening and he went over your life from beginning to the present day and he said then that there was not a better man in the world in his opinion or one that he thought he would any sooner ask advice of than John Muir so now advise us as you think best. if we sell it will be to my brother Thomas Maynard and if he wont buy us out we will have to rent it if we come the long cold winters here is a discouraging sight for us. there is plenty
