[illegible] CCB [illegilbe]]Raymond, Fresno Co., Cal.July 20, ’91.Dear Mr. Johnson:My wagon-journey scheme fell through – my friend’s confounded wife hauling him off elsewhere. I rec’d from Mr. Stiles, of Garden & Forest, the Ms. of which I spoke. The paper was too long for that publication, and I suspect it to be too long for use anywhere without much bother. I have written a shorter article which I enclose. I want to try Garden & Forest again, the present article being considerably less than half the length of the other, and containing more than half of the meat. Will you send it to Mr. Stiles, and find out as quickly as possible if he will use it. I might try a San Franc. paper with it, but I believe the results would be much better – would have more influence on public opinion – if published in G. & F than if in any other publication. If not used there, perhaps you can find a channel elsewhere. I enclose Mr. Stiles’s note to me. You will see that length appeared to be the only063652)preventive to publication of the first article. It is a pity that the latter was not returned to me sooner with the explanation, for I have not the least tenderness about boiling down or biting off an article, and perhaps before now I could have sent something that would have found Mr. Stiles’ approval as to length as well as in other respects. If successful this time, I wish you would see that about four copies of G. and F. were sent me. They could be sent from that office, and the price be deducted from whatever I might be paid for the article. Let me know the result as early as may be, for I want to use the subject before it gets too condemned old and cold. It is fat to the time just now. I would be glad to write, a little later, something shorter about the Nat’l Park for G. & F., but I don’t care much about sending copy around on the mere chance of publication, There’s no satisfaction about that practice in any direction.Yours Very TrulyGeo.
