[letterhead]San Francisco, March 24/92My dear Prof. Muir,The Hassler expects to leave shortly having a party of the U.S. Coast Survey aboard who will work in vicinity of St. Elias. The Geological Survey is very short offunds for this Fiscal year and I cannot obtain the detail I desire to make the trip under favorable auspices. – Another year we may have an opportunity and in mean time I will let you know when Thompson comes out so that we can have a talk as to an expedition next year.-Without Government aid we cannot expect to make a good showing especially as the Coast Survey party is well provided with funds and transportation I think Messrs. McGrath and Turner
