ARNOLD ARBORETUM, HARVARD UNIVERSITY. Jamaica Plain, Mass., July 14,1897. My dear Muir: I have your letter of the 7th this morning. I am none the less grateful to you for all the trouble and labor you have incurred in my behalf because you were not successful. Perhaps before autumn we may take a look at these Abies together and make definite arrangements for obtaining the flowers next spring. It certainly would be too bad if this splendid tree was not fully represented in The Silva, and I had rather postpone the appearance of the final volume for a few months than have such a calamity occur. Canby wants to postpone staring until the evening of August 4th. This will suit me very well and, leaving Boston on the 4th, we shall be at Bamff early on Monday morning, August 9th. If you can arrange to get there on the 8th, all the better, as we shall want to get into the woods as soon as possible. I haven't any idea when the Alaska steamers start but I should suppose we could not get to the coast by the 15th, or possibly the 17th. We shan't be as much hampered as we were last summer, and we ought to have a splendid time and learn something about Spruces and Firs, although the more I see of them the less I know. Send me a telegram if there is any necessity for change of plan at this end. Faithfully yours, [illegible] 02317
