[2]I hope nothing worse than business has detained you so we still expect to see you all here — Your friends here are all in their usual health – only Joanna is not as well as when you saw her last, her eyes have not improved any – we are all anxious to know if any thing can be done to help her, she has been at home all summer and has tried what rest and quiet could do for her – but that has not helped her any – could you give me any help in this matter — [3]Yesterday I had a letter from John he wrote that he was ready to leave Oakland and he felt much pleased to think of again seeing Yosemite valley he intends spending two months around the base of the Sierras, and then return- ing to Oakland and finishing his book during the winter his health has suffered a good deal from confinement he has had fever twice but hopes to regain his health in the valley — Your father is still in Hamilton and says he has no wish to come back to Portage but thinks that
