[2]For the past year and a half I have been working in the best position I ever had Being boss pattern maker in an engine and mill work shop in this place employing about 40 men. I get $2.25 per day; small wages for California: Not very large for our own county - but pretty good for the size of the shop. I have a great deal of drawing to do all new work comes through me much of it has to be designed and all drawn carefully to a scale for pattern makers and machinists to work by There is quite as much responsibility as I care for if any mistakes occur in any department some of it is most sure to be faltered , on to me [3]You may judge that I have mastered pretty well Mechanical Drawing and pattern making as well as greatly extending my knowledge of machinery generally I have also kept an open eye to the progress of Sicnce Was greatly pleased to notice your name in two instances in the public prints connected with sientific and geographical discovery We had three removes since our first house keeping in O. [ Sound?] we spent the winter of 70 to 71 on the north shore of Georgian Bay near the Bruce mines I was repairing a large saw mill There was a great deal to interest us in that locality and would have interested you exceedingly
