I should like you to have absolute control of some place in that region where the elect might resort in the evil times coming when the Valley will be thronged with the baser sort. Inform yourself of-everything pertinent to this subject.I shall try to see Bierstadt in a day or two. I've a notion that he means to paint some winter landscape in the mountains.Went to see Dr. Kellogg Saturday. Such a house as I found him in -- just like the inside of a haystack. We will have a day together, somewhere. I told him I wanted him to go to the valley with us -- he said he could not go this year -- has never been; has an arrangement to live one season there with Duncan.Jos. LeConte lunched with me and read your letter. Said he was about persuaded to relinquish the Columbia and go to you. I wish he had and we had started the next day. We talked an hour about the discovery, appreciated it, and your rapture, and throbbed in tune. Wait, my friend, until you stand in the Cordilleras and Alps and see how the handwriting all corresponds, and then your anthem shall be sung.Have a letter from South America to-day, but not from our dear boy.
