William and Maymie Kimes Annotation
This abridged reprint of no. 47 is prefaced with the statement: ""Mention was recently made in the Journal of Mr. John Muir, formerly a resident of this city but now of California, where he has acquired considerable distinction as a naturalist and geologist. The following extracts are from a letter of his published in the San Francisco Bulletin, descriptive of a:new Yosemite valley, on King's river, recently explored by him."" Muir went to Indianapolis in 1866 and was employed by Osgood, Smith & Co., where in 1867 an accident injured his eye.
