William and Maymie Kimes Annotation
After describing the geographical features of Alaska with the assistance of maps and charts, Muir draws a comparison, saying "this new country is large, and like a large man with a big soul, a great, kindly, loving heart, it is bounteous in blessing to man and beast. It would make, if divided, 500 States as large as Rhode Island, 250 as large as Delaware, and about fifteen the size of Ohio." Muir concludes with a discussion of the products, chiefly minerals, furs, and fish. For an interesting anecdote concerning Muir's trip to Sacramento, see the John Muir National Historic Site's newsletter, View from John Muir's Window, no. 9, June, 1974, p. 3.
