William and Maymie Kimes Annotation
Muir began his talk with a lengthy discussion of "the important part which glaciers perform in exposing veins of mineral which are contained in the earth's crust." He stated that the geological formation of the gold and silver regions of Mexico and the southwest was the same as that of British Columbia and Alaska, only in the latter "the veins were more concealed by vegetable matter owing to the greater moisture prevailing and inducing the growth of vegetation." In closing, Muir prophesied: "The whole country is timbered, and it is destined to become the greatest lumbering region of the world."
